How Groundworks can Assist!

Groundworks provides multiple stabilization and repair solutions for seawall projects experiencing soil loss, erosion, movement, void formation, or insufficient lateral support. Depending on site conditions and the existing seawall construction, repairs can include single-component polyurethane injection, helical tiebacks, wall anchors, or a combination of these systems.

Single-Component Seawall Injection

Groundworks can perform single-component polyurethane injections behind and beneath existing seawalls to address soil loss, erosion, voids, and water migration. The material is injected into the affected soils where it reacts and expands, helping fill voids and bind loose or compromised soil.

This approach is especially beneficial where water movement through seawall joints, cracks, penetrations, or beneath the wall has caused supporting soils to wash out. The polyurethane can react in wet conditions, making it well suited for marine and waterfront environments. The goal is to stabilize the soils behind the seawall, reduce continued erosion and soil migration, and help protect the surrounding improvements from future settlement.

Helical Tieback Anchors

For seawalls experiencing rotation, bowing, leaning, or lateral movement, Groundworks can install helical tieback anchors to provide additional lateral support. The anchors are installed through or behind the seawall and advanced into competent soils beyond the active failure zone.

Once the required installation criteria are achieved, the tiebacks are connected to the seawall and tensioned as required by the project design. This transfers lateral loads away from the seawall and into more stable soil, helping stabilize the existing structure and reduce the potential for continued movement.

Wall Anchor Systems

Where site access and property configuration allow, wall anchor systems can also be utilized to stabilize seawalls experiencing lateral movement. The system connects the seawall to anchors installed within stable soils behind the wall, providing additional resistance against hydrostatic and lateral earth pressures.

Wall anchors can be an effective option for strengthening an existing seawall while minimizing the need for complete seawall replacement.

Combined Seawall Repair Approach

Many seawall failures involve both structural movement and loss of supporting soil. In these situations, Groundworks can combine structural anchoring with polyurethane injection. Helical tiebacks or wall anchors provide structural stabilization, while single-component polyurethane injection addresses the voids, loose soils, and erosion occurring behind or beneath the seawall.

This combined approach allows Groundworks to address both the cause and effects of seawall deterioration while working to preserve the existing seawall whenever practical. The final repair system can be tailored to the seawall configuration, soil conditions, access limitations, and project-specific engineering requirements.
